Upcoming EventsFor the month of June we'll be reading Basket Case by Carl Hiaasen and discussing it at Melissa's on Sunday, June 29th at 6pm. Carl Hiaasen's many fans will instantly recognize the earthy, hilarious style of his latest novel, BASKET CASE, but that is where the comparisons end. This book is written in first person --- a first for Hiaasen. His own career as a newspaper man --- an investigative reporter at one point and now a twice-weekly columnist for the Miami Herald --- gives Hiaason a hilarious but insightful vantage point as he explores what might be his most complex hero. And perhaps Jack Tagger is nearer and dearer to Hiaasen's heart than heroes of past novels...more Carl Hiaasen (pronounced "hiya-sun") was born and raised in South Florida and presently lives with his family and pet snakes in the Florida Keys. He attended Emory University and was graduated with a degree in journalism from the University of Florida in 1974. Since 1976, Hiaasen has worked for The Miami Herald, beginning as a general assignment reporter and later joining the newspaper's prize-winning investigations team. There he worked on projects exposing dangerous doctors, crooked land deals and drug corruption in the Bahamas and the Keys. For the last sixteen years, Hiaasen has written a twice-weekly column that has won numerous awards and earned him the enmity of many sleazy politicians, who've found themselves the target of his pen. |
