Upcoming Events

February's Book Club will be hosted by Kelly McCutcheon on Sunday, February 10th at 6pm. The main dish will be Spanish chorizo and black bean soup/chili. Debbie and Kim S will bring wine. Jackie will bring the appetizer. Melissa will bring chips and dip and Kim E will bring bread. Margaret will bring a rice dish and Mary will bring a salad. Katrina will bring strawberries dipped in chocolate and MaryRose will bring dessert.

Kelly stated in the invitation, "I would like you to think about the things he(the author) DOESN'T talk about or show and the illustrations."

We'll be reading and discussing The Curious Sofa by Ogdred Weary.

The New York Times writes of Edward Gorey, "His satires (often of tawdry Victorian mysteries) are not mere commentaries on the manners and mores of a distant age; they are inventive narratives about evil adults, mischievous children, illicit lovers and improbable beasts." Amazon Books Editorial Review adds, "Or, in the case of The Curious Sofa, improbable furniture."

Jody Austin from Ocala, Florida says this about the book: "This delightfully ilustrated tale tells the story of Alice and her wicked little sexual encounters. The illustrations never show anything inappropriate nor is the prose ever truely pornographic, yet the reader knows exactly what is going on by observing the characters knowing smiles."

picture of the front of the book: a cartoonish picture of a portion of a red sofa as seen through an open door.

picture of the author: a balding, slightly portly man with a full white beard in white boating sneakers leaning against the wallpaper, arms folded in front of a large half circle window.

News

Let's see. This is Debbie's latest quirk...she was in a traumatic car accident on Wednesday, Jan 23. She is bruised, sore, pissed and recovering from the shock of "THE BOARD" but will most likely lose her leg, no, I mean car. Email her to send your condolences. The rest of the quirks cited during the January meeting will be kept fully confidential by all members. (If you really wanna know, join the book club) Katrina is going to India for two months in mid-February to work with her sister in women's development and to shop and to drink Kingfisher beer! During the January meeting, Mary got cozy with Jackie's cactus and Jackie's dogs kept the floor clean. The food was amazing...we never lost our appetites no matter how much of those tapas we ate....was there anything Spanish there??
